Called the “Cube” it can be run directly off 24v or a solar panel and although it is designed for odor control, it’s something that, perhaps with a little experimenting, might be adapted with a tube for treating water supply? Check with the manufacturer or do a search for other suitable units.
Ultraviolet Light
An ultraviolet water tank filtration system kills bacteria, viruses and other pathogens by preventing them from reproducing. Even with the fresh taste of pure rainwater, the method of collection means the water can be prone to picking up E-Coli and fecal coliforms from your roof and guttering. The powerful UV light is shone on the water as it passes through the UV tube, destroying the organism DNA.
Ultraviolet light exists at the invisible, violet end of the light spectrum. UV light is at a wavelength of 254nm (nanometers), and is not visible to the naked eye. This portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is termed UV-C light or a germicidal wavelength. At this 254nm microorganisms undergo a genetic alteration which ultimately results in inactivation.
UV does not kill micro organisms like chlorine does, but instead inactivates them - they are sterilized or neutered and will eventually die off. UV does not change the taste, color or odor of water. It simply removes the risk of illness caused by microbial contamination making water safe to drink. A UV system able to treat the water for a typical house will consume about the same amount of energy as a 40 or 80-watt light bulb depending on the models. UV is a cost-effective, natural way to improve water quality. Do an internet search for more info and location of suppliers.
Solar desalination
The Solarflow was invented at The Environmental Technology Centre, Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia. The Solarflow is a self-contained solar-powered unit capable of producing 400 L/day of high quality drinking water from brackish water via reverse osmosis and requires only 120 W of photovoltaic power.
